Term 2 Week 7 2023
From the Principal
Dear Families,
Next Friday is our first Prep Open Day for students beginning Prep in 2024. If you have a child starting school next year and haven’t yet registered for one of our two Prep Open Days (Friday 9th June and Monday 12th June), please contact the office to register your child. The Prep Team has put together a wonderful morning for families and I am looking forward to meeting all of our 2024 Prep students and their families.
If you haven’t yet completed your School Satisfaction and Feedback Survey it’s not too late. Please take the time to complete this survey as your feedback is important in helping us identify and plan for areas of improvement as well as ensuring we know where we are being successful. Surveys close on Wednesday 7th June.
The weather has certainly turned cool this week. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct school uniform for the winter months. That is a navy or maroon jumper with navy tights for girls and tracksuit pants for boys. Wearing the correct school uniform is part of our high-expectations culture and it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that we are demonstrating pride in our school.
This week we congratulate Flynn Sullivan and Darren Robson who have both earnt 25 P.A.T.H. Notes. They received a special Principal’s certificate on Assembly on Monday. It has been wonderful to see all the students coming through the Office with their P.A.T.H. Notes and hearing what they have earnt them for. Each week a staff member enters the P.A.T.H. Notes into Compass and families can log into their child’s profile on Compass to see the P.A.T.H. Notes that their child has received.
Each year schools have the opportunity to nominate an individual who makes an outstanding contribution to the life of their school community in the annual Spirit of Catholic Education Awards. These awards are presented during Catholic Education Week (Week 3, Term 3). In 2023 we are delighted to announce that the nominee for St Francis is Katrina Rainbow. Katrina is a very deserving nominee and I look forward to sharing further details of her nomination during Catholic Education Week. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Katrina.
Have a wonderful week.
Take care and God Bless
Amanda
Religious Life of the School
It has definitely been a very busy few weeks and now we head into the last weeks of Term 2. We also began Ordinary Time again after Pentecost, meaning the colour is now green and will stay this way until Lent at the end of the year. This coming Sunday, the Church calendar celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. Also known as Trinity Sunday, it is celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, the 50th day after Easter. Trinity Sunday celebrates the mystery of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
St Marcellin Champagnat
Next week on Tuesday, June 6, we celebrate St Marcellin Champagnat’s feast day. Marcellin Champagnant is one of our school’s charisms as the Marist Brother’s are a part of our history.
St Marcellin Champagnat was a French priest who began the tradition of Catholic education that is known as Marist in 1817. Dismayed by the lack of knowledge of religion he found among the rural children of southern France and spurred on by a strong faith, Father Champagnat initially established a network of village schools. They were places where hard work and excellent achievement were valued, and individuals loved and prized. A special concern was given to those students who found school difficult. Above all, the schools were places that had the Gospel at their heart, encouraging students to respond to it with the same faith and generosity that Mary did.
The values that the Marist Brothers bring to their associated schools are knowledge and love of Jesus in the way of Mary, love of others, simplicity, family spirit, love of their work and presence in the midst of those whom they are called to serve.
Youth Mass
Thank you to all the students, families and staff who joined us to celebrate Pentecost on Sunday. The students did a wonderful job with their readings and participation.
Reconciliation Assembly
Thank you to 1A for the Reconciliation Assembly on Monday. Reconciliation Week is a good time to reflect on the past and move forward together.
Class Mass
Our students from Years 1, 2 and 5 celebrated the Eucharist and family on Thursday. A big thank you to all the families who joined us, we loved having you there. Thank you also to Fr. Manoj who always makes us smile.
Blanket Drive
Vinnies Refugee Assistance Program (VRAP) is looking for winter blankets and doonas to donate to refugee families in Townsville. If you have any clean blankets or doonas that you would like to donate, they can be dropped into school.
Prayer
Dear Lord
St Marcellin was inspired by Jesus and Mary to create loving and caring schools for children. Help us to make our school a place where everyone is known and cared for.
We pray in gratitude for our teachers who are full of Your wisdom. May we show them respect and love as they model Saint Marcellin’s care for us.
Give us courage to stand up for others when we need to and strength when we are feeling weak ourselves. When we feel unseen, remind us that no moment goes unnoticed and Jesus is always with us.
Mary Our Good Mother, pray for us.
St Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.
And let us always remember to pray for one another.
Amen.
God bless
Nicole

In this edition of SchoolTV - BODY IMAGE
Kids today are more obsessed with their body image than those in past generations. This is partially influenced by the media and their social connectivity. Encouraging kids to have a healthy body image in childhood, can lay the foundations for good physical and mental health later in life.
A recent study highlighted that body image is one of the top three concerns for Australian youth. Over half of girls in high schools have tried to lose weight. One-third of teenage boys wanted to be thinner and another third wanted to be larger. Children need to understand that their body shape and size is not a reflection of their health or success. Parents and schools need to work together to help kids understand that everyone is born with their own ‘body-suit’.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn how to encourage their child to have a positive body image and why it is so important to their mental health.
We hope you take time to reflect on the resources offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school guidance counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Class in the Spotlight - 1/2B
What a busy few weeks we have had in 1/2B! Here are a few of the activities we have been busy working on:
- On Tuesday Ray Thompson from the North Queensland Cowboys came to talk to us about the Resilience Project. Year 1’s were working on some Mindful Colouring and how to be present in the moment and Year 2’s were working on Empathy.
- On Wednesday we participated in National Simultaneous Storytime and read the story of ‘The Speedy Sloth’. It was all about how we can persist to complete tasks even though they may be challenging. We retold the story focussing on the 3 main parts of the story and drew pictures to match.
- In the Writing Project we have been learning how images and illustrations help to tell a story. We have started drawing pictures ready to write our Narrative next week.
- In Maths, Year 1 have been working on Place Value and partitioning two digit numbers using MAB blocks and number sentences. Year 2 have been looking at Tranformations, in particular what happens to a shape when you flip, slide or turn it.
