Term 3 Week 4 2023
From the Principal
Dear Families,
On Tuesday all families are invited to join us for a family morning which will start with our Term 3 Learning Breakfasts at 8am. Following on from this, we invite you to stay and read to students before joining us for Christian Meditation for the feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Our morning will be concluded by about 9:20am. We hope that you join us for this occasion.
We continue to have a lot of sickness in our school this week with many staff and students away each day. If your child is unwell, please keep them at home. It would be wonderful to have our school community feeling healthy again.
Just a reminder to drive carefully and slowly in the car park. We ask that families collect their children from the school side of the car park. Students should not be crossing the car park unless they are accompanied by an adult. Please remember that the Stop, Drop and Go area is purely that. The driver and passengers are to remain in the vehicle. Over the past few weeks we have had several drivers and passengers get out of cars to assist students and this is holding up the pick up line. If your child requires help with their seat belt or getting in the car please park and help them. Please ensure that anyone who picks your child/ren up is aware of this.
I have another update for you this week regarding some of our school improvement projects that have started. Our AV upgrade in the Samaritan Centre will be happening over the September school holidays. This is a large project with over $57000 of upgrades including new projectors, speakers, microphones and the ability to run the PowerPoint from the front of the Hall just to name a few of the new features. I would like to thank Jesse from TCE’s IT department for all of the time and effort he has put into working with Omnititan (AV Company) securing quotes and the best possible equipment for us.
Have a wonderful week.
Take care and God Bless
Amanda

The Feast of St. Mary Mackillop
Next week on August 8, it is the feast day of St. Mary Mackillop, also known as Saint Mary of the Cross. She was an Australian Roman Catholic nun and the co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Mary Mackillop is Australia’s first saint.
She was born on January 15, 1842, in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia. Despite facing numerous challenges, including poverty and opposition from Church authorities, Mary dedicated her life to providing education and social services to the underprivileged.
In 1866, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph with the help of Father Julian Tenison Woods, aiming to improve the education of poor children and to assist the needy. The congregation grew rapidly, establishing schools and orphanages across Australia.
Mary's commitment to education, particularly for those in remote areas, earned her widespread recognition and support. However, her advocacy for the rights of the poor and her dedication to her faith also brought her into conflict with some church officials.
In 1871, she was excommunicated by the local bishop for alleged insubordination, a decision that was later reversed. Despite these challenges, Mary remained steadfast in her mission, and the Sisters of St Joseph continued their important work.
Mary Mackillop passed away on August 8, 1909. Her legacy lives on as she was canonized as Australia's first saint on October 17, 2010. She is remembered for her compassion, dedication to education, and her commitment to serving the marginalized and disadvantaged in society. Today, her impact is still felt through the ongoing work of the Sisters of St Joseph and the influence of her teachings on social justice and education in Australia and beyond.
We will celebrate St Mary Mackillop and her life with a liturgy next Monday hosted by 4A.
All families are welcome to join us for this very special feast day event.
We will also take time on Tuesday to reflect, with our whole school Christian meditation after the reading challenge.

St Mary Mackillop
God of the prophets you gifted Mary MacKillop with vision and courage.
In her we see one who was not afraid to speak fearlessly your gospel of love.
We pray for the sensitivity and imagination to read the signs of our times,
and to articulate new possibilities for our own day.
Like Mary, may we learn to confront all that is oppressive and unjust,
and empower others towards true freedom and integrity.
Spirit of wisdom, be with us as we face new horizons.
Amen

In this edition of SchoolTV - ANXIETY
Most young people today experience anxiety at some point in their life. Sometimes that slight rush of anxiety that occurs prior to an exam or sporting event, can enhance their performance. However, experiencing too much anxiety, over long periods of time, can be extremely damaging to their health and wellbeing. There is a difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ anxiety.
Statistics show, that the psychological health of young people today is far worse than it was a generation ago. This is having an adverse effect on children in both primary and secondary levels. Some of their issues of concern include stress, school, study, body image and friendship.
Parents need to be aware of the warning signs of ‘bad’ anxiety. There are preventative measures parents can implement as well as teaching kids the skills to cope more efficiently with their anxiety.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school guidance counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Class in the Spotlight -5A
5A has been extremely busy in Term 3!
🏈We had our Adopt-A-School Cowboys Tahlulah and Krystal visit our class to help with Literacy Rotations and play some games with us.
🏕️We went to Paluma for Year 5 Camp and had the best time listening to nature, going on bush walks and challenging ourselves on the Sensory Trail and high ropes.
🌏In Science, we role played the paths of the sun, moon and earth and discussed the effects this had on us and our planet.
📚In our Literacy Rotations, we have been drawing, writing and sounding out the /t/ sound and finding patterns when spelling it.
🎶We’ve also been learning the actions for songs that will be in our school Liturgy on Monday.
